Human hair wigs and hair pieces can be a great non-surgical hair replacement solution. Because they are human hair they look extremely natural, because they behave and appear exactly as one expects hair to do. They can also be styled much easier than synthetic hair because one can use heated appliances on them, so they are a perfect solution for anyone who likes to chop and change their hair on a regular basis. For the same reason, however, they do take a little more maintenance.
Long term alopecia sufferers will often prefer the versatility of a human hair wig, allowing compatibility with all hairstyling appliances and practices. Human hair wigs, though more time consuming in maintenance, will be more rewarding for those prepared to spend additional time on grooming. Depending upon the structure of the donors hair, one may have to spend additional time creating the desired look. When purchasing a human hair wig one should clarify the ethnicity of the human hair being used. Unless the human hair wig is specified as being of European (Caucasian) origin, it should safely be assumed that the human hair wig will be of Asian origin (Indian or Chinese generally). Unprocessed, or virgin, European hair with its fine, soft texture is the most expensive of the different ethnic types. One should expect to pay a considerable premium for a long, European human hair wig. Recent demand from the human hair wig and extension industry has applied further pressure on prices and market supplies. Asian hair is far more easily sourced, available at a substantially reduced price compared to European hair. Altering the dark black pigment requires heavy processing (bleaching and re-colouring) to create more traditional Caucasian colour tones. Using an acid bath, the hairs pigment is stripped and the cuticle removed for ease of knotting. Such processing, used to change to the structure of the hair in a human hair wig, has a significant negative impact on the longevity of the hairs condition and life expectancy. Following processing the damaged cuticle is coated with silicon to enhance the finished appearance. Unfortunately, deterioration can occur within 6 weeks with noticeable colour fade and dryness. The re-colouring of processed asian hair is possible though not advised. Resulting accuracy with colours can be unpredictable and exposure times will be different to that of normal hair
Prices:
Pre-made Human Hair systems cost £325-£509 (the price mainly depends on the length of the piece).
Bespoke, hand-made human hair pieces come in two price bands because two different types of hair can be used.
Asian hair pieces cost £650, and European hair pieces cost £750. The price difference comes partly from the difference in the ease of sourcing – Asian hair is much easier to purchase than European hair, and is therefore at less of a premium. The price difference can also be attributed to the fact that if a Caucasian male wishes to buy an Asian hair piece, the hair will often have to be treated to suit him, which will damage the hair. Because of the reduced quality, the price is respectively lower.
